Gathering

I've actually worked on a couple of additional projects since I wrote, "Project 2 - Sneak Preview." I learned that no matter what the fabric, my daughter does NOT like pillowcase dresses. So the pretty fabrics in "Project 2 - Sneak Preview" will be used to make a dress for her following a pattern.

However, between working on those and now, I have decided to sew a gift for a friend. I can't blog about the details or it won't be a surprise. I doubt she even reads this blog, but she has access to the link so for now I will just say I learned two big lessons in this project.

Lesson 1. If you aren't sure of what you are doing, use a baste stitch just inside where your real stitch should go. It is so much easier to rip out the baste stitch than real stitches. I spent over an hour last night cutting out tiny stitches I could barely even see. Not fun.

Lesson 2. When in doubt, don't forget about the Internet. I have some reference books to help me figure out what some terms mean. However, while I thought I was a read directions kind of girl, I'm really a watch directions kind of girl. YouTube.com has an infinite number of videos - even sewing ones. Thanks to this video, I'm off to do some skirt gathering, which I couldn't figure out how to do just following the directions in the pattern I'm using.
